TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 14th-ranked Arizona State baseball team had the tying and game-winning runs on base with two outs in the ninth but couldn't bring them in Saturday night in a 3-2 loss to Cal in front of 2,515 fans at Packard Stadium.

Right-hander Trevor Williams (5-1) retired 22 of the last 25 batters he faced, throwing five perfect innings in the process, but took his first collegiate loss. He allowed one run and two unearned runs in 8 2/3 frames, striking out three and walking two.

ASU loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth for Joey DeMichele, but the junior infielder flied out to center field to end the game.

The Sun Devils close out their three-game series with Cal at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Packard Stadium.
