SAN ANTONIO (AP) After winning a world championship, Jordan Wilimovsky returned home to claim a national title Monday.
Wilimovsky touched first in the 1,500-meter freestyle on the final night of the U.S. national championships in San Antonio, adding to the 10-kilometer open water title he won two weeks ago at the world championships in Russia while becoming the first American swimmer to earn a spot at the Rio Olympics. His winning time at the Northside Aquatics Center was 14 minutes, 57.05 seconds.
Other winners Monday included World University Games champion Lindsay Vrooman in the women's 800 free; Laura Sogar in the women's 200 breaststroke; American record holder Amanda Weir in women's 100 free, edging out Allison Schmitt; Jacob Pebley in the men's 200 backstroke; and Great Britain's Craig Benson in the men's 200 breast.
Wrapping up a brilliant meet, Michael Phelps finished fifth in the 200 breast with a personal-best time of 2:11.30.
