Wilcox named WCHA rookie of the week

MINNEAPOLIS — Gophers goaltender Adam Wilcox was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week after helping Minnesota earn three points over the weekend in a series against Alaska-Anchorage.
Wilcox recorded his second shutout of the year in a 4-0 win Friday over the Seawolves. The South St. Paul native followed that up by allowing two goals in a 2-2 tie. After allowing just two goals this weekend, Wilcox improved to 5-1-1 on the season with a 1.58 goals-against average — tops in the WCHA and fifth in the country.
Minnesota entered the 2012-13 season with two options in net, including Wilcox and junior Michael Shibrowski. But after strong play in goal early in the year, Wilcox asserted himself as Minnesota's starting goaltender. He has played in eight of the Gophers' nine games so far this year (including seven starts), while Shibrowski has played in just three and started two. Wilcox was the sixth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2011 NHL draft.
Wilcox and the Gophers host rival Wisconsin this weekend for a two-game series at Mariucci Arena.
