Weaver returns home to have shoulder checked

Whether it’s precautionary or because they have a real concern, the Angels have sent pitcher Jered Weaver back to Southern California to be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum, their team orthopedist.
Weaver is still scheduled to start Friday night at Angel Stadium against the Detroit Tigers, but it’s looking less likely that he’ll make that assignment. Weaver did not have his usual throwing session between starts this week.
The right-hander was hit on the right shoulder by a Dustin Ackley line drive Sunday in Seattle. He leads the Angels with a 16-4 record and 2.86 ERA.
Before Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Oakland A’s in Oakland, manager Mike Scioscia said he would wait until after Yocum’s examination to decide if Weaver will skip a start.
In addition to Weaver, the Angels’ starters against the Tigers are Ervin Santana on Saturday and CJ Wilson on Sunday.
