Washington edges ASU softball in 13 innings

SEATTLE -- Washington broke through with the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning to hand Arizona State an 8-7 loss in the Pac-12 Conference softball opener for both teams.
Washington improved to 26-4 overall and 1-0 in Pac-12 play, while ASU fell to 19-9 and 0-1.
Washington jumped on ASU pitcher Breann Macha for seven runs in the first inning, but Macha and Dale Ryndak then held the Huskies scoreless for eight innings before Washington broke through with the game-winning run.
Casey Stangel (7-1) was the winning pitcher, while Ryndak (8-3).
The Sun Devils loaded the bases in both the 10th and 12th innings but were unable to capitalize on a night in which they left 16 runners on base.
Washington's Kylee Lahners led off the 13th with a single off Ryndak on a 1-2 count, and Kelly Meggs came on as a pinch runner.
Taylor Van Zee followed with a single to advance Meggs to second. Ali Aguilar followed with another single through the right side that Sierra Rodriguez was unable to field cleanly, allowing Meggs to score.
