Warning of Sugar Bowl ticket fraud issued
Ohio State's berth to the Sugar Bowl for the first College Football Playoff has, not surprisingly, led to a hot ticket. Unfortunately, it has also brought with it the threat of fraud.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine issued a news release Monday warning fans his office was aware of "at least nine consumers who have lost hundreds of dollars to online tickets involving sporting events and concerts" in the past year.
Two of those incidents involved someone posing as a member of the military and offering Sugar Bowl tickets on Craigslist at prices that would qualify as a major bargain.
While the university has had a hard time unloading all of its tickets for recent bowl trips, the Toledo Blade reported Sunday the school's 13,000 tickets for the Sugar Bowl sold out in less than one day and the average secondary market ticket price on SeatGeek is $410, or more than double the lowest face value.
Unusually low ticket prices are one of the red flags noted by DeWine's office in potential cases of fraud along with requests for payment via prepaid money card or wire transfer.
Ohioans can report suspicious ticket offers to the AG's office by calling 800-282-0515 or by visiting www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov.
