Mike Zimmer is again turning to a familiar face to help the Minnesota Vikings' defense.

A day after Minnesota agreed to terms on a one-year deal with safety Taylor Mays, who played for Zimmer in Cincinnati, the Vikings have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with cornerback Terence Newman, a source told FOXSportsNorth.com.

Newman, 36, had 72 tackles, 14 pass deflections and one interception while starting all 13 games he played for Cincinnati last season.

Zimmer and Newman have a long history together. Newman started his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys when Zimmer was Dallas' defensive coordinator. Newman was drafted No. 5 overall in 2003 by Dallas. Newman had two Pro Bowl seasons for Dallas before later joining Zimmer, who had become the Bengals' defensive coordinator.

Six of Newman's 12 NFL seasons have come with Zimmer as defensive coordinator. Newman has 37 career interceptions.

Newman adds depth and competition at cornerback for Minnesota, which saw a breakout from 2013 first-round pick Xavier Rhodes last season. Josh Robinson improved in his first year under Zimmer last year. The Vikings also have veteran Captain Munnerlyn at cornerback to go with second-year player Jabari Price, Marcus Sherels, Shaun Prater, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Jalil Carter.

Minnesota, which owns the No. 11 pick in this year's draft, has also been linked to Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes. Reports said Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman were at the Michigan State Pro Day earlier this month.
