FOXBOROUGH, Mass. --

United States midfielder Jermaine Jones will undergo a scan tomorrow to assess the extent of a left groin injury sustained in New England's 2-2 draw with LA Galaxy on Sunday.

Jones sustained the injury after stepping into the wall shortly after the half-hour. He jumped with his teammates and sprinted out after the effort was blocked. He pulled up quickly and immediately signaled to the bench. He soon limped off with his place in the U.S. squad to face Netherlands and Germany this week hanging in the balance.

"I have no idea what happened," Jones said. "I feel the same pain that I got before the surgery. This time, I feel it a little bit more than before I got the operation. I cannot move and put my leg up. I feel that I'm not able to keep going."

The injury occurred in the same area that forced Jones onto the sidelines earlier this year. He underwent sports hernia surgery to repair the issue on Feb. 10 and missed the first five matches of the season as he worked his way back to full health and fitness.

"I knew it," Jones said. "The pain I got before when I played -- it was so much pain. I have it right now. I knew it. I knew something happened. Now, tomorrow, we have to take some pictures and see how bad it is."

The outcome of those scans will determine whether Jones is able to take his place in the 22-man squad named by U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann on Sunday evening.

Jones noted he reached out to Klinsmann in the wake of the injury to inform him, but he said it is too soon to determine whether he will remain in the squad or withdraw ahead of the pair of the friendlies.

"I will take the pictures," Jones said. "I texted Jurgen, but we'll take a picture and then make the last decision."

The setback comes at a particularly unfortunate time for Jones after he spent much of the early part of the season recovering from a knock and sliding into central defense to help the Revolution cope with injury issues. Jones found his stride once more as he claimed the captain's armband for the 2-1 victory over Philadelphia on April 19 and returned to midfield for the past two matches.

Those displays earned him a place in Klinsmann's midfield selection for this upcoming pair of matches, but this latest setback might ultimately keep him from linking up with the side yet again.

"Trust me, it's really bad," Jones said. "I don't feel really good with it. I worked to come back and feel good. Now I have more pain than before. Nobody's happy with that. It's not good."
