UA women rout CSUB in season opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Four players scored in double figures to lead the Arizona women’s basketball team to a 71-50 win over CSU Bakersfield on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Senior guard Davellyn Whyte posted 16 points, senior forward Cheshi Poston scored 14, junior forward Alli Gloyd had 11 and freshman Keyahndra Cannon added 10.
Poston also had 11 rebounds and six blocks to record her first-career double-double. In addition, junior forward Erica Barnes (Sacramento, Calif.) grabbed 12 rebounds and nine points.
Arizona outrebounded CSUB 62-41 and forced 26 turnovers in the game.
“The first game of the season is under our belt now, and we feel good about how hard we played,” UA head coach Niya Butts said. “We still turned the ball over a little too much, but we did a better job of rebounding the basketball, so I’m happy with that.”
In the first half, Arizona outscored CSUB in the paint 22-10 to take a 34-27 lead.
Poston grabbed five rebounds in the first half to give the Wildcats a 26-19 rebounding edge. She also had eight points while Gloyd added nine in the first 20 minutes.
UA came out blazing in the second half on a 15-1 run in the first four minutes. The Roadrunners never overcame the deficit, and the Wildcats finishing things off down the stretch.
Tyonna Outland led CSUB with 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
