TUCSON, Ariz. -- The seventh-ranked Arizona baseball team polished off a three-game sweep of visiting Harvard with a convincing 13-2 victory Sunday before a crowd of 1,745 at Hi Corbett Field.
The Wildcats relied on a steady outing from starting pitcher James Farris, errorless defense and a balanced offensive attack to cruise to the 11-run win on the heels of a more tightly contested 3-1 ballgame on Saturday night.
Farris, a sophomore, improved to 2-1 with a solid seven-plus innings on the mound. The right-hander allowed two earned runs and scattered six hits while racking up six strikeouts and walking one. Relievers Michael Lopez and Mathew Troupe combined for the final six outs of the game.
Arizona (8-2) pounded out 13 hits overall, led by Johnny Field's three. Field joined Alex Mejia, Seth Mejias-Brean and Trent Gilbert with a pair of runs batted in.
Harvard (0-3) committed six errors to aid the Wildcats, particularly in the early stages. Crimson starter Jacob Kremers (0-1) pitched three innings and surrendered three runs -- all unearned -- on three hits. Kremers, who suffered the loss, was replaced by Tanner Anderson, who gave up five runs on four hits but was charged only one earned run. Altogether, seven of the first eight runs allowed by the Crimson were unearned.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, UA posted single runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively. With a 4-1 advantage, the Wildcats broke the game open with four runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings before capping the scoring with a lone run in the eighth frame.
The Crimson mounted their biggest threat in the second inning but were unable to take advantage of a bases-loaded, no-out situation. Farris settled down and induced a run-scoring groundout, a strikeout and a pickoff to escape the jam with just the one run allowed.
Eight Wildcats finished with at least one run scored and one RBI in the game. The top four hitters in the lineup (Joey Rickard, Mejia, Robert Refsnyder and Field) accounted for nine of the runs scored.
