MINNEAPOLIS -- Andrew Albers will be the next young Twins player to make his major league debut.
Minnesota will recall Albers, a left-handed pitcher, from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday. In 22 starts with the Red Wings this year, Albers was 11-5 with a 2.86 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 132 1/3 innings. He'll take Scott Diamond's spot in the Twins' rotation after Diamond was optioned to Rochester following Thursday's loss.
Albers, 27, was initially a 12th-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004. He opted to play college baseball at the University of Kentucky and was later drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 10th round of the 2008 draft. He signed with the Twins as a minor league free agent before the 2011 season after pitching for the Quebec Capitales of the independent Canadian-American Associated. Albers missed the 2009 season due to injury.
A native of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Albers pitched for Team Canada in the year's World Baseball Classic. He last pitched on Wednesday and allowed just two runs on five hits in eight innings for Rochester. Albers will wear No. 63 with the Twins.
