The Minnesota Twins sent Rule 5 pick Terry Doyle, a right-handed pitcher, back to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.
In three games this spring, Doyle had a 16.88 ERA after giving up 10 runs on 14 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He also issued three walks and struck out just two. The Twins acquired Doyle with the second pick in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft. If a player is chosen in the Rule 5 Draft, he must stay on that team’s 25-man roster for the entire season or be given back to his original team.
During his four-year minor league career, Doyle had a combined 2.94 ERA. He split time between Class-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham last season in the White Sox organization.
Minnesota’s starting rotation seems to be set prior to the regular season, so the
bullpen was likely the only option for Doyle to make the Opening Day roster. In four minor league seasons, however, he pitched just 14 times in relief — including 10 times during his first year in the minors in 2008.
