One day after it was announced that Ricky Nolasco has been dealing with a sore elbow, the Minnesota Twins placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow. To take Nolasco's place on the 25-man roster, the Twins recalled catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann from Triple-A Rochester.
Nolasco, who lasted just two innings Sunday against the Yankees, had not made any mention publically about elbow issues. After it was finally revealed to Minnesota's coaching staff and front office that the elbow was an issue, Nolasco flew back to Minneapolis to have an MRI on the elbow.
Since signing a four-year, $49 million deal with Minnesota this offseason -- the biggest free-agent contract in Twins history -- the 31-year-old Nolasco has struggled. In 18 starts, he went 5-7 with a 5.90 ERA. He's allowed 140 hits and 68 earned runs, both of which are the most among American League pitchers.
Herrmann, 26, previously spent 17 games with Minnesota earlier this year but did not catch; he played left field and right field. In 33 games with Rochester this year, Herrmann was batting .314 with 15 RBI and 11 doubles. The Tomball, Texas, native has appeared in 81 major-league games dating back to 2012 and has batted .176 with four home runs and 19 RBI during that span.
