Twins pitcher Adalberto Mejia lands on DL with arm strain

Published Aug. 9, 2017 1:18 p.m. ET

The Minnesota Twins placed starting pitcher Adalberto Mejia on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday after the lefty suffered an arm strain during an appearance against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Mejia was yanked in the fourth inning Tuesday night while suffering from upper-arm pain after allowing three runs on seven hits.

Designated hitter Kennys Vargas will fill Mejia's spot on the roster after being called up from Triple-A Rochester.

Vargas is hitting .221 with eight home runs in 145 at bats for the Red Wings this season, and .244 with eight home runs in 176 at bats for the Twins.

He last appeared in a game for Minnesota on July 17.

Mejia earned a spot towards the back end of the Twins' rotation after a strong performance at spring training, and is 4-5 this season with a 4.47 ERA in 18 starts.
