Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey underwent successful surgery Tuesday to decompress the ulnar nerve in his right elbow, the team announced.
Pelfrey, who experienced discomfort in his elbow while on a rehab assignment for a groin injury, met with noted sports orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla. After meeting with Dr. Andrews, it was determined that Pelfrey had ulnar nerve irritation in his elbow. No timetable has been set for his recovery, but it likely will take several months.
Pelfrey made just five starts for the Twins this year, going 0-3 with a 7.99 ERA before injuring his groin. In his first year with Minnesota last season, Pelfrey was 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA in 29 starts. He missed almost all of the 2012 season with the New York Mets after having Tommy John surgery on the same right elbow.
Prior to the 2014 season, Minnesota signed Pelfrey to a two-year, $11 million contract despite his disappointing 2013 campaign. He has a collective 5.56 ERA in 34 starts for the Twins.
