The Minnesota Twins were thin at center field after trading Sam Fuld to Oakland earlier this week. They addressed that Sunday with a roster move.
The team announced Sunday that they claimed outfielder Jordan Schafer off waivers from Atlanta. He'll be added to the 25-man roster prior to Tuesday's game against San Diego, and a corresponding roster move will be made to free up space for him on the roster.
Schafer, 27, has spent parts of five seasons in the major leagues. In 63 games with the Braves this year, he batted just .163 with 15 stolen bases and two RBI. In 395 career games, Schafer is a .222 hitter with an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .611.
While Schafer won't add much offensively, he gives the Twins another option at center field aside from Danny Santana, an infielder who has been playing out of position for a good portion of the season. Of his 395 games in the majors, 249 came as a center fielder.
