Twenty years ago Tuesday a move was made that changed the course of the history of the Atlanta Braves.
The team was 25-40 in 1990. Injuries to Pete Smith and Mike Stanton, and the unexpected illness of newly signed free agent Nick Esasky had the Braves playing well below expectations, which were to inch closer to the .500 mark after years of suffering through years of awful baseball.
Stan Kasten, then the Braves President, decided something had to happen. So he fired manager Russ Nixon.
