After the most trying year of his young life, former Tulane football player Devon Walker is conquering the unique challenges his life now presents with grace and an ever-present smile.
Walker reaches an important milestone this week: he is back on campus, attending classes, after severely injuring his spinal cord last September, during the Green Wave's game against Tulsa in Oklahoma.
Walker is now paralyzed from the neck down and wheel-chair bound, but he's taking 9 hours worth of classes this semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The former safety needs 30 hours to graduate in Cell and Molecular Biology.
Former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason, who's now battling ALS, is helping Walker learn to use technology to improve his lifestyle.
Construction is almost finished on a special area inside Walker's home in Destrehan, LA, called Devon's Den. It's a bedroom and bathroom equipped with the latest advances in computers and electronic resources to aid Walker in his studies, rehabilitation and the comprehensive 24-hour care he requires.
Tulane head football coach Curtis Johnson says Walker will also be involved with the football team, mentoring the Green Wave players this season.
