Tracking Winston: Longest pitching outing of year results in first win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Jameis Winston's longest outing of the season led to his first victory -- and a milestone win for coach Mike Martin.
Winston pitched 4.2 scoreless innings on Saturday night, striking out two and allowing just two hits. He was efficient in throwing just 44 pitches to 15 batters, retiring Wake Forest 1-2-3 in the 10th and 13th innings.
Florida State went ahead 4-3 in the top of the 13th on Danny De La Calle's RBI single, and Winston shut the door in the bottom of the inning. The road win gave Martin his 1,800th career victory.
Martin said he didn't want to pitch Winston that many innings, but with the game going deeper into extra frames, and Winston not going deep into counts, he was the best option.
"I feel good," Winston told the Tallahassee Democrat. "When you're out there pitching, all you can do is compete."
INVESTIGATION QUESTIONED
A New York Times story has scrutinized the Tallahassee Police Department's investigation into Winston.
"They just missed all the basic fundamental stuff that you are supposed to do," state attorney Willie Meggs told the Times. "The case was not properly investigated from the start."
BO KNOWS WINSTON
Well, Bo knows what Winston is trying to do. Bo Jackson has been an All-Star and an All-Pro, and he thinks that Winston will have trouble playing two sports because of the demands placed on quarterbacks.
Still, Jackson said: "If he thinks he can do it, then more power to him."
HAPPY EASTER
