Undefeated star filly Songbird will not run in the Kentucky Oaks after developing a slight fever.
Considered one of the leading 3-year-olds in the country - male or female - Songbird would have been the overwhelming favorite for the Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 6, the day before the Kentucky Derby.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer told The Associated Press on Sunday night that ''she will be taken care of and will go back to the track only when she is 100 percent.''
Songbird has won all seven of her races and took the Santa Anita Oaks by 3 3/4 lengths April 9 in her last start. The filly is owned by Rick Porter Jr., who also owned the filly Eight Belles, the Derby runner-up in 2008 who broke down after the race and was euthanized.
