Tony Romo says he's tired of being "average."
Although some of his bigger critics would debate whether he's even that, Romo made some bold statements about changing the direction of the Cowboys on Tuesday.
"We were 8-8. That feels average," Romo said in comments published by The Dallas Morning News. "I don't like being an average football team. I don't like being an average quarterback who is a part of 8-8. I feel like we're better than that.
"I feel like we need to do some things to change that."
Romo's comments were his first to the media since signing a $108 million contract extension in March. Romo spoke as the Cowboys began OTA's at Valley Ranch, although Romo will not be participating because of recent surgery to remove a cyst on his back.
He said he knows it won't be easy to change the Cowboys' current mediocrity.
"The challenge of trying to get to where we want to go is extremely exciting, extremely tough, extremely challenging in a good way.
"It's not just me. It's all the players, all the coaches, everyone in the organization is doing that. No one is content with an 8-8 football season.
"It's going to be good. It's going to be good around here."
Romo's new contract means that if the Cowboys are going to be good again anytime soon, he will still be the quarterback.
"I love this organization," Romo said. "We've started something here. We haven't achieved that goal yet."
