DETROIT -- Tigers pitcher Doug Fister is headed for the 15-day disabled list after injuring his left side in the fourth inning of Saturday's game against Boston.
With two out and a runner on first, Fister fell behind Ryan Sweeney 2-0 before Jim Leyland and trainer Kevin Rand came out of the Tigers dugout. After a brief consultation, Fister returned to the dugout and was replaced by Duane Below.
Fister allowed three hits and no runs in his 3 2-3 innings. Below ended the inning by getting Sweeney to pop out, and ended up as the game's winning pitcher with 2 1-3 shutout innings.
About an hour after Detroit finished off a 10-0 win, the team announced that Fister would be placed on the disabled list with a left costochondral (ribcage) strain. Brayan Villarreal will replace him on the roster, with Below being the most obvious candidate to take Fister's rotation spot.
