Tigers closer Joe Nathan underwent surgery in Dallas Wednesday.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus told reporters in Kansas City that Dr. Keith Meister performed surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament (Tommy John surgery) and repair the torn flexor tendon.

Nathan, 40, told MLB.com that "everything went very well" and he was already doing some exercises.

Just one week before, Nathan left his rehabilitation outing in Toledo after throwing just 10 pitches, saying he felt a pop and it felt like his arm was broken.

Tests showed the tears in the UCL and flexor tendon.

Because of the dual surgeries, Nathan will not pick up a baseball for at least eight months.

Ausmus said he expected Nathan to be around the team from time to time when they're at home.

Nathan will remain on the 15-day disabled list until the Tigers need a roster spot. Then they can transfer him to the 60-day DL.

The Tigers have a $10 million option on Nathan for 2016, but they can buy out the option for $1 million.

In Nathan's absence, Joakim Soria is 9-for-9 in save opportunities.
