Texas junior quarterback David Ash won't return this season, Texas announced on Monday morning.
Ash originally suffered a concussion on Sept. 7 against BYU and missed the following week against Ole Miss. He returned against Kansas State on Sept. 21 but left the game after suffering another head injury and hasn't played since.
"Though he's made a lot of progress, we have not been able to clear him to return to competition," Texas athletic trainer Kenny Boyd said in a statement. "Due to the duration of symptoms, we are now at a point that we all believe the best approach for him is to not return this season."
Because Ash has been ruled out the rest of the season, he will be eligible for a medical redshirt. He can return in 2014 as a junior and not lose a year of eligibility in 2013 after official NCAA approval.
Ash has continually had reoccurrence of concussion symptoms and was ruled out of games earlier this season a week in advance of kickoff.
"We've visited with David and his family and are all in agreement on his not returning to action as the best next step in his recovery," Boyd said. "We will continue to treat him and watch his progress closely and expect this will allow him ample time to return to full health and participation for the spring season."
Ash began the season as the Big 12's most experienced quarterback and has started 22 games. He completed 53-of-87 passes this season for 760 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions.
