The University of Texas system regents approved a $62 million upgrade to Darrell K. Royal-Memorial Stadium on Thursday, but it’s not what you think.
The Longhorns aren’t trying to one-up the Aggies, who last week approved a $450 million complete overhaul of Kyle Field that would put its capacity at 102,500 – more than Royal-Memorial Stadium’s current 100,119.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, the improvements won’t add any seats. Instead, the funds will mainly be used to renovate Bellmont Hall, the building incorporated into the west side of the stadium. Bellmont Hall is now an academic center for kinesiology, health education and fine arts.
The improvement package includes a volleyball practice area under the north end zone as well as some additional athletics offices.
This isn’t a response to Texas A&M’s splashy upgrades to Kyle Field, but who would be surprised if UT announces one in the near future?
