Tennis a passion for Heat's McAdoo

If you want to get in good with Heat assistant coach Bob McAdoo, try talking tennis.

Because while the 6-foot-9 McAdoo earned a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame for being perhaps the best shooting big man of all time, he's also crazy about tennis.

"I have the same passion for it that I have for basketball," McAdoo said.

And McAdoo, 59, has passed his love for the sport to his kids. His 15-year-old daughter, Rasheeda, was nationally ranked before recently moving up to a higher age group. His oldest son, 37-year-old Robert III, is a teaching pro at a country club in New York.

McAdoo wanted his children to know they have options when it comes to sports.

"It's a difficult sport for blacks because it's so expensive," he said.
 
But having the financial means, McAdoo thought it was important to introduce both basketball and tennis to his kids.

"If they can't be good in one, maybe they can be good in the other," McAdoo said.

"Both (sports) have the same type of movements. They've got choices. That's kind of what I want for them if they've got the athleticism to deal with it."

McAdoo isn't alone in that line of thinking. It's becoming more common to see African-American children being introduced to tennis. Grand Slam champion Serena Williams sees it.

"I do, and that's awesome and I applaud that," said Williams, who was attending a recent Heat game as a guest of Adrienne Williams, forward Chris Bosh's fianc
