PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Tyger Talley tossed a three-hit shutout and the Arizona baseball team tallied the program's first series sweep of Stanford with a 6-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.
Talley (W, 3-0) was brilliant throughout, facing just five over the minimum and not allowing a Cardinal base runner past second. The right-hander scattered three hits and walked two in his first career complete game.
Arizona (19-6, 4-2 Pac-12) provided its junior hurler with a two-run cushion in the third, then padded that lead with two runs in the sixth and single insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Zach Gibbons was 3-for-4 with a run scored and Scott Kingery collected two hits, a run and two batted in for the offense, which capitalized on some erratic Stanford pitching.
Starter Chris Viall (L, 1-2) struck out five early, but struggled with his command after the first two innings. The right-hander allowed only two hits, but he walked five, hit a batter, threw three wild pitches and surrendered three runs in five innings.
Arizona scored twice against Viall in the third inning with just one base hit. Wild pitches allowed both Kingery and Kevin Newman to cross home with the initial runs.
In the sixth, the Wildcats scratched across two more runs against relievers Chris Castellanos and Tyler Thorne. A sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Elijah Skipps plated Gibbons, who earlier doubled. Later, Kingery singled home Sawyer Gieseke with a two-out run.
Two innings later, Kingery's sacrifice fly tacked on another insurance runs, scoring Jared Oliva, who led off with a walk against Thorne.
In the ninth, Bobby Dalbec provided an emphatic solo home run off Thorne to set the score at its final, 6-0.
Stanford (9-11, 0-3) had won the series each of the last two seasons, but the Wildcats swept the Cardinal for the second time in the last four years. However, Arizona had never swept Stanford on the road.
