Suns treading water in thick playoff race

Although Steve Nash seemed like a reasonable candidate for All-Star inclusion, this general absence of league-celebrated skill defines the Suns' current playoff-chasing predicament. With Thursday's getaway home loss to the Dallas Mavericks added to its ledger, Phoenix sits at a mediocre .500 for the season. With a few days of R-and-R ahead, the Suns are 2 1/2 games behind the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz in a battle for the eighth spot in the Western Conference standings.
"I think we're playing hard . . . I think we're inconsistent," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said when asked to assess his team going into the break. "I think that's the thing that will hurt us the most."
