Sun Devils win opener at Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Devin Marrero and Joey DeMichele had three hits apiece and Andrew Aplin hit a two-run homer as the 23rd-ranked Arizona State baseball team defeated Washington State 7-4 on Friday night at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman, Wash.
 
Starting right-hander Brady Rodgers (7-2) gave up three runs on four hits and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings to earn the win for ASU (25-16, 10-9 Pac-12).    
 
Right-hander Jake Barrett closed out the ninth inning for his seventh save of the season.

The Sun Devils took an early three-run lead in the first inning behind consecutive doubles by Marrero and DeMichele and a dropped fly ball by Washington State (21-17, 7-8). Marrero gave ASU a 4-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI triple after a single by Aplin.
 
The Cougars cut the deficit to 4-2 in the second inning, but Aplin's two-run homer highlighted a three-run seventh inning for the Sun Devils to make it 7-2.

Matt Dunbar replaced Rodgers in the seventh inning before Barrett finished up.
 
J.D. Lackenby (4-4) took the loss for the Cougars.
