Sun Devils have foundation for stellar 2011 season

For Sun Devil nation, it took about 17 hours for the euphoria from ASU's win over Arizona to turn to disappointment over the NCAA's decision to deny a waiver that would have allowed the team to play in a bowl game.
But once the initial disappointment faded, the Devils and their fans had plenty to feel good about. The 6-6 season, as frustrating as it was, could well be part of the necessary growing pains in building a solid foundation that should produce a successful inaugural campaign in the Southern division of the new Pac-12 Conference.
A key question heading into the offseason is the quarterback position. The competition between Brock Osweiler, who led the team to season-ending victories over UCLA and Arizona, and 11-game starter Steven Threet should be fairly tight come spring practice, but Osweiler heads in as the likely favorite to win the job.
The sophomore has already shown poise beyond his years, and now that he has decided to forgo his plans to join the basketball team, his full attention will be devoted to improving his skill set on the football field.
