COLUMBUS, Ohio - First, young Ohio State fan Grant Reed named his tumor "Michigan."
Then, he beat cancer. And tonight, he's at the Ohio State-Penn State game as a guest of the Ohio State athletic department.
Reed greeted Buckeyes players and head coach Urban Meyer at the 50-yard line as they entered Ohio Stadium about 6 p.m. Just before kickoff, he joined the Ohio State band on the field and led the sold-out crowd in the "O-H...I-O" cheer.
Now 13 and a seventh grader, Reed got national headlines when he named the tumor that had grown on his brain "Michigan" and vowed to beat it.
In May 2012, Reed underwent a 16 1/2-hour surgery to have his brain tumor removed. Although the surgery was successful, he woke up without being able to move his left side or speak and had a serious vision problem.
He spent nearly 10 weeks at the hospital following the surgery, then went through occupational and speech therapies and was able to continue to attend school. Reed's road to recovery included several rounds of radiation and chemotherapy treatments, the last of which came in July.
Reed will also be at the Ohio State-Michigan game next month. Last summer, Michigan coach Brady Hoke called Reed after hearing his story and offered tickets for the entire Reed family.
