EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Antoine Winfield might be getting closer to deciding on where he wants to continue his career after being cut by the Minnesota Vikings on March 12.
Winfield, who will turn 36 in June, is scheduled to visit with the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, the first free-agent visit for the 14-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowler since he was a surprise cut by Minnesota on the first day of free agency. A source told FoxSportsNorth.com that Winfield has heard from a “handful" of teams since being released and is trying to sort through his options, with the Vikings still in the mix to re-sign one of their defensive leaders from last season's playoff team.
Minnesota held Winfield out of many practices last year in an effort to keep him fresh, and the move paid off. Winfield played in 16 games a year after playing in only five and had 110 tackles and tied for the team lead with three interceptions. Two of his previous three seasons had been marred by injury.
Coach Leslie Frazier has reportedly talked with Winfield, trying to get him to re-sign with the Vikings. Frazier also mentioned at the Scouting Combine in February – before releasing him -- that the team would likely try to decrease Winfield's snaps next season.
Winfield was cut because he had $7.25 million left on the final year of his contract in 2013.
