FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Northern Arizona football team held its second scrimmage of fall camp Saturday at the Walkup Skydome. The Lumberjacks scrimmaged for roughly an hour and a half, with the NAU coaching staff getting an up-close look at the 2013 squad in a variety of game-like situations.

Compared to the first scrimmage a week ago, the offense was markedly improved. One of the more notable performances came from true freshman Hunter Burton, who caught a pair of 30-plus-yard touchdown passes in the scrimmage.

“I think our entire football team has vastly improved from last week,” said coach Jerome Souers. “Overall, there was a better understanding of what we are trying accomplish."

And while the offense took a step forward, for the second week straight week, the defense was able to largely keep things contained, garnering praise from the staff.

“I’m really pleased with what our coaching staff and players have done in the last seven days,” said Souers. “I thought our ball security was better today. We had fewer penalties, and when they did occur, they were mostly with the younger group. I thought our receivers made some good plays out there today, along with our quarterbacks connecting on some nice throws.”

The Lumberjacks have one more scrimmage scheduled before opening the season in Tucson against Arizona on August 30.
