Soi Phet wins E.B. Johnston Stakes at Los Alamitos

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) Soi Phet won the $75,000 E.B. Johnston Stakes for older California-breds by a half-length Saturday at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Soi Phet ran one mile in 1:34.61 and paid $3.40 and $2.20 as the 7-10 favorite.
Magic Mark returned $2.20 as the 8-5 second choice, while Avanti Bello was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third. There was no show wagering because of the four-horse field.
Trained by Leonard Powell, Soi Phet earned his third stakes victory at Los Alamitos. The 8-year-old gelding has career earnings of $750,471, with 11 wins in 48 starts. He was claimed for $16,000 by Powell for a partnership.
