Sharks coach Gold fined for insulting television referee

DURBAN, South Africa (AP) Sharks coach Gary Gold has been fined $11,300 for using crude and insulting language toward the television match official during a Super Rugby game against the Crusaders of New Zealand.

Gold was found guilty of two counts of misconduct by the southern hemisphere rugby body SANZAAR after twice approaching TMO Johan Greeff and verbally insulting him during the March 26 game in Durban. Gold admitted the charges.

The Sharks lost the game 19-14 after a late try by Crusaders No. 8 Kieran Read.

Gold was also ordered to pay $750 for the disciplinary hearing costs. The former South Africa assistant coach had $1,800 of his fine suspended.

SANZAAR said in a statement Tuesday that Gold had apologized to Greeff.
