GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Eight players will not be on the field when the Green Bay Packers begin training camp on Friday morning.
The NFL announced on its transactions page that seven Packers were declared Physically Unable to Perform and were placed on the team’s preseason PUP list. Those players are running back DuJuan Harris, offensive tackle Derek Sherrod, defensive linemen Jerel Worthy and Mike Neal, rookie offensive lineman J.C. Tretter and safeties Sean Richardson and Chaz Powell.
Inside linebacker Jamari Lattimore will also be unavailable due to a non-football illness.
Most of those eight players were expected to be out when Green Bay opened training camp. Worthy is recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered in Week 17 last season, Harris missed the entire offseason training activities and minicamp practices after a cyst was discovered near his lungs, Sherrod has still yet to be cleared after breaking his leg in December 2011, Tretter broke his ankle earlier this offseason and Richardson had neck surgery in January.
However, the reason for Neal and Powell not passing their physicals is unknown. Neal has had a string of injuries in his three-year career with the Packers, but he participated in OTAs and minicamp and was being worked at outside linebacker in addition to his regular defensive-line spot.
The preseason PUP list is much different than the regular-season version. During training camp, as soon as any of those players passes their physical, they will be cleared to practice.
The one piece of good injury news for Green Bay is that cornerback Davon House, who had offseason shoulder surgery, passed his physical.
