Seminoles lose WR Willie Haulstead to academics

TALLAHASSE, Fla. -- Florida State lost one player for the season and another for an extended period of time, coach Jimbo Fisher said after Thursday's practice.

Fisher said senior wide receiver Willie Haulstead did not qualify academically and was no longer on the team.

Haulstead had 38 catches for 587 yards and six touchdowns as part of a breakout 2010 season. But he suffered a concussion in 2011 preseason workouts and did not play that year. He had just three catches in 2012.

True freshman tight end Jeremy Kerr was lost for an undetermined amount of time with what Fisher called a "pretty decent cartilage tear" in his knee.

Fisher said Kerr underwent an MRI and the injury did not affect the ACL. But the coach added Kerr will be out for some time after suffering the injury in Wednesday's practice.

Kerr had been expected to see playing time as a backup to Nick O'Leary.

It was the latest in a string of bad news for FSU tight ends.

In May, O'Leary was involved in a motorcycle accident that sent him flying for about 100 feet. He has recovered fully.

In June, Kevin Haplea was lost for the season during off-season workouts with a knee injury.

And in July, Christo Kourtzidis transferred from the program.

Kerr's injury leaves FSU with just two tight ends: O'Leary and Giorgio Newberry, who in the past few days moved over from defensive end to tight end.
