SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Mark Martinez was promoted Wednesday to head baseball coach at San Diego State, succeeding the late Tony Gwynn.

Martinez, who joined the Aztecs as an assistant coach in July 2005, had taken over the day-to-day duties for a majority of last season while Gwynn focused on his health.

The Aztecs finished 42-21, including victories in nine of their final 11 games entering the NCAA tournament. SDSU won the Mountain West Conference tournament before losing two straight games in the NCAA regionals.

Gwynn, a Hall of Famer who spent his entire 20-year MLB career with the San Diego Padres, died on June 16 from oral cancer, a disease he attributed to years of chewing tobacco. Gwynn had retired from the Padres in 2001 and took over the SDSU baseball program in 2002
