Ryan Lochte's recent engagement to Playboy model Kayla Rae Reid earlier this month came as a surprise to many, as the two haven't been publicly dating for very long. In fact, it'd be hard to blame you if you didn't know they were dating at all, considering Lochte apparently covered it up intentionally.

According to a recent profile from NY Mag, Lochte was contractually obligated by one of his sponsors "to present himself as single" at the Summer Olympics in Brazil. Lochte wouldn't reveal which company made the request, but it seems he fulfilled it.

The American swimmer went on the Today show in August and talked about Tindering in Rio, which certainly helped him give off the vibe of a single man. Maybe Lochte was just making it all up to appease the sponsors. Then again, we've all heard the stories about how much fooling around that goes down in the Olympic Village during the Games, so who knows.

Lochte and Reid have actually been dating for 10 months, though they were only publicly a couple for two before the swimmer popped the question. We can assume that the sponsor in question lifted their request following the Olympics, or they were one of the brands to drop Lochte following his Olympic scandal.

Lochte also revealed in the profile that, at 32 years old, he just got his first credit card. He also thought that Canadian Thanksgiving was called "Jewish Thanksgiving."

Obviously, appearing single is way easier than appearing smart.
