Russia's athletics return could be at European Championships

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) The head of European Athletics says after meeting Russian officials that its national team could yet compete at the European Championships if reinstated by the IAAF.
The championships scheduled July 6-10 in Amsterdam could be a comeback event ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics if Russia's suspension following allegations of state-sponsored and systematic doping is lifted in June.
European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen tells The Associated Press ''there is still time enough'' for a Russian team to enter.
Hansen is on the IAAF Council which should decide Russia's status on June 17 in Vienna, Austria.
On Tuesday in Moscow, Hansen met Russian IOC member Alexander Zhukov and new leaders of Russia's athletics federation.
Hansen says an IAAF task force's work on assessing Russia's progress toward reinstatement wasn't discussed.
