KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- That awkward situation of Royals manager Ned Yost having a longer contract than his boss, general manager Dayton Moore, finally was resolved Friday.
The Royals announced that Moore has received a two-year contract extension that will run through the 2016 season.
In October, the Royals extended Yost's contract through the 2015 season.
Moore, who joined the Royals from the Atlanta Braves' organization in 2006, enjoyed his best season as general manager in 2013, when the Royals went 86-76, their first winning season since 2003. The Royals also stayed in the hunt for the final wild-card spot until the final week of the season.
"When Dayton's contract was extended during the 2009 season, I felt that this franchise had begun to turn the corner and that we were pointed in the proper direction," Royals team president Dan Glass said in a statement. "It's been a challenging process, but we are now seeing tangible evidence that the process is working, thanks to the tireless efforts of Dayton and his baseball operations staff.
"Dayton is not only an outstanding baseball man, but he's very much a part of our family and one of the top individuals I've ever had the pleasure of working with."
Moore's goal when he started with the Royals was to develop from within, and then lock down a nucleus of young players with long-term contracts, which he has with players such as Billy Butler, Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar.
Of the nine offensive starters, five are homegrown, and two others (Escobar and Lorenzo Cain) were acquired in the trade of another homegrown product, Zack Greinke. In addition, six members of the Royals' bullpen -- the best statistically in the American League last season -- came up through the Royals' system.
