Romo better than Aikman? Turner says no

Troy Aikman might believe that Tony Romo is a better NFL quarterback than he was, but San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner says Aikman is simply being "very nice and diplomatic."

"It still comes down to playing great in the fourth quarter, playing great with the game on the line and obviously playing great in the playoffs,'' Turner told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday. "It's hard for me to name three or four guys who were better than Troy in that situation.

"I think Troy was being very nice and diplomatic, but there aren't many guys I would list as better than Troy Aikman. It's certainly not anything against Tony Romo or a de-evaluation of his ability. I think a lot of Tony Romo. He's an outstanding player. But I wouldn't list many guys as being better than Troy Aikman.''

During an event last week in Brownsville, Texas, Aikman stated, "I think Tony already is a better quarterback than I was."

That comment created a lot of publicity, including Aikman's former teammate Darren Woodson questioning if Aikman had been drinking alcohol when he shared that opinion.

"To me, there are a lot of guys who make plays throughout games,'' added Turner, who was Aikman's quarterback coach and offensive coordinator from 1991-'93. "Then there are guys who make special plays when the game is on the line, the plays that make the difference in winning and losing. That was Troy's greatest strength.''
