The Browns might be looking for a new top offensive mind in their organization as current offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is interviewing for at least one head coaching position.
Multiple reports have indicated that Shanahan will interview for the Buffalo Bills top position on Thursday.
Even if Shanahan fails to land a head coaching, he might join back up with his father, Mike, if he lands a head coaching position. Mike Shanahan, is also being considered for several head coaching positions, including the Bills.
Kyle Shanahan said during the season that his goal was to become a head coach in the NFL.
"That's always been my goal," Shanahan said in October. "I think about 95 percent of coaches, if you ask them, that's eventually their goal. I think everyone wants to be at the top of their profession, and head coach is the top of our profession.
"I think everybody works for that," he said. "It's not the only thing you're trying to do, but I think that's the goal for everybody in what we do."
At the time, Kyle's name was starting to get mentioned as a possible head coach candidate as he had the Browns offense in the top half of the NFL minus Pro Bowl players Alex Mack, Jordan Cameron and Josh Gordon. The Browns were 6-3 and then 7-4 before losing their final five games and finished 7-9.
However, by the end of the season, the offense slipped to 27th in the NFL in scoring at 18.7 points per game.
Shanahan has also been linked to re-join his father, Mike, who is being considered as a head coaching candidate with the 49ers, Raiders and the Bills. Mike Shanahan did not coach in 2013 after being fired from the Redskins after the 2013 season.
Mike and Kyle were together with the Redskins from 2010-13 and had the top offense in the NFL in Robert Griffin III's rookie season in 2012.
Kyle Shanahan has been an offensive coordinator for the past seven seasons, including one season with the Browns. With GM Ray Farmer's background primarily on the defensive side of the ball and Pettine's history as a defensive coordinator, it is believed that the Browns relied on Shanahan for much of the Browns offensive expertise.
Pettine was asked at his season-ending press conference if he's still confident in Shanahan and his system and if he expects to keep him.
"Yes. Yes," Pettine responded.
Cleveland.com reported earlier this week that there might be friction between some of the Browns coaches and the front office.
