ST. LOUIS -- All eyes are on St. Louis as the Rams' final roster gets closer and closer to becoming official.

According to USA Today's Tom Pelissero, the Rams cut 17 from their roster Friday night -- and Michael Sam wasn't one of them.

St. Louis will need to trim five more players in order to have their roster total 53 by Saturday's 3 p.m. Central time deadline.

Sam was credited with 11 tackles (10 solo) and a team-best three sacks in four exhibition games for the Rams and would become the first openly gay player to make an NFL regular-season roster if he survives the final round of cuts.

According to the reports, Garrett Gilbert, a quarterback drafted in the sixth round by St. Louis in 2014, was one of the 17 cut along with seventh-round tackle Mitchell Van Dyk and defensive linemen Kourtnei Brown and Deantre Harlan.

Still in the mix to make the squad is defensive tackle Ethan Westbrooks, who is widely considered Sam's biggest competition.
