Report: California Chrome likely done for 2015 with bone bruise, may be retired
California Chrome, the reigning Horse of the Year, has suffered a cannon bone bruise that will likely sideline him for the year, Marcus Hersh of the Daily Racing Form is reporting.
California Chrome won the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before finishing in a dead-heat for fourth in the Belmont as he bid for the Triple Crown.
He was expected to race at Royal Ascot but missed some training and that cost him that start.
He was then expected to race at Arlington Park, but that start and potentially all others have been scuttled.
Trainer Art Sherman told Hersh the possibility exists the 4-year-old Cal-bred will be retired to stallion duties.
California Chrome made a charming run through the Triple Crown series in 2014. He was absolutely dazzing in the Derby and Preakness under jockey Victor Espinoza.
He suffered a cut coming out of the gate in the Belmont Stakes and that compromised his ability to complete the Triple Crown in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont.
