The Texans are doing everything they can to get Ed Reed to Houston.
The former Baltimore Ravens safety and current free agent was flown to Houston on Thursday morning on the private jet of Texans owner Bob McNair, reports the Houston Chronicle.
"This is classy, man" Reed said, according to the paper. "This is southern hospitality. It's a great feeling."
The 34-year-old Reed, one of the greatest safeties of all time, reached the end of his six-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens and was not re-signed as the Super Bowl champions undergo a restructuring. Linebacker Ray Lewis retired and Baltimore cut safety Bernard Pollard.
After the Texans released safety Glover Quin, the team is looking for an option that can fill the hole in their secondary ... and possibly a leadership role in their locker room as they try to fulfill the Super Bowl-potential that many feel this team has.
And who better to show a team what it takes to win a Super Bowl then a current champion, such as Reed.
“Both of us are contenders and want to get a championship, but we still have some things to work out," Reed told the Houston Chronicle. “Conversations have been great, amazing. We’re on the same page as far as what we need to get done.”
Signing Reed would be the Texans' first big veteran acquisition since they acquired cornerback Johnathan Joseph and safety Danieal Manning in 2011 and would re-unite Reed with his close friend Andre Johnson. The two were college teammates at Miami.
"Andre's like a little brother to me," Reed said. "He hasn't been recruiting me, but he's been communicating with me the last 10 years about Houston."
