There's been a lot of talk this week about removing the designated hitter from the National League, following the injury of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright.

CincinnatI Reds starter Michael Lorenzen likely wouldn't agree with that line of thinking.

A two-way player at Cal-State Fullerton, Lorenzen is now a pitcher in the big leagues for the Reds who made his first start Wednesday at Great American Ball Park. In the first inning, Lorenzen threw his first major-league strikeout.

An inning later, Lorenzen recorded a hit and accomplished it in his first try, just as Mike Leake did in 2010.

Leake, a first-round pick like Lorenzen, was 2 for 2 in his April 21, 2010 debut vs. the Chicago Cubs.

On the mound, Lorenzen gave up three earned runs and struck out five in five innings of work. He finished 1 of 2 at the plate.
