Reds, Indians shutout in Gold Glove awards

The Reds had one of the best defenses in all of Major League Baseball in 2014 but they were shut out when this season's Rawlings Gold Glove awards were announced Tuesday night.
Center fielder Billy Hamilton, second baseman Brandon Phillips and shortstop Zack Cozart were National League finalists for the top defensive honor at their positions but lost out. Phillips was seeking a fifth Gold Glove and second in a row but lost out to Colorado's D.J. LeMahieu. Cozart, who has been credited with saving 23 runs over the last two seasons, had impressive numbers but lost out to Atlanta's Andrelton Simmons.
Hamilton was passed over in favor of Juan Lagares of the New York Mets. Of the three finalists, Hamilton was thought to have the best chance at winning and becoming the first Reds outfielder to win a Gold Glove since Eric Davis won three in a row from 1987-89.
The Reds led MLB with a .988 fielding percentage and committed the fewest errors in baseball with just 72 this past season.
Cleveland as a team was at the opposite defensive spectrum from the Reds as the Indians committed the most errors in baseball but left fielder Michael Brantley and catcher Yan Gomes were finalists in the American League. Both lost out to repeat winners from the AL champion Kansas City Royals. Alex Gordon won his fourth consecutive Gold Glove in left field, while Salvador Perez won his second straight Gold Glove behind the plate.
Grady Sizemore in 2008 was the last Indians player to win a Gold Glove.
Winners are determined on a combination of voting by managers and coaches, which accounted for approximately 75 percent of the process, and sabermetric data.
