Will Grier, one of the top-rated quarterbacks in the 2014 class, committed to Florida on Wednesday, giving the Gators a major early recruiting boost.
“If you ain’t a Gator, you’re Gator bait, so I’m going to Florida,” Grier said.
Florida had long been a favorite for Grier, and the four-star recruit ultimately chose the Gators over Tennessee, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Alabama, and others.
“I couldn’t find anything I didn’t like about Florida,” Grier said. “I couldn’t tell them no and give them any good reason -- it’s just perfect.”
Just last month, the North Carolina prep star rose to mainstream prominence when he set a national record with 837 passing yards and tied another national record with 10 touchdown passes in a single game, a 104-80 win for Davidson Day school.
Grier said the Florida coaches were extremely happy when he told them of his intentions to be a Gator.
“They were really excited and they said they’re done with recruiting quarterbacks. ... I’m the point guard of the 2014 class, recruiting other guys,” Grier said.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound signal quarterback has maintained for a while that he wanted to make an early commitment and recruit others to join him. On top of his list are 2013 wide receivers Marquez North and Demarcus Robinson, both four-star prospects in Scout's 2013 class.
Grier says Florida is an ideal fit with a lot of upside.
“I have a good opportunity to come play after (quarterback Jeff) Driskel,” Grier said. “I like how (offensive coordinator Brent) Pease runs the offense, I think I have a good opportunity to have a lot of success there.”
While he’ll still talk to other schools occasionally, Grier says his commitment to the Gators is as solid as can be.
“It’s solid. If I wasn’t sure, I wouldn’t have done it,” he said.
“I’ll talk to others out of respect or if something were to happen like if Florida didn’t want me anymore, just in case. But I’m 100 percent committed.”
Grier is the sixth-ranked quarterback in Scout's 2014 class. He's the second of the top 10 2014 quarterbacks to commit, joining No. 1 Jerrod Heard, who pledged to Texas in August.
