GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The roster spot that was opened up last week when the Green Bay Packers released Jeremy Ross has been filled by practice-squad running back Michael Hill.
The Packers promoted Hill rather than signing a free agent. Hill, 24, signed to Green Bay's practice squad on Sept. 2 after he was cut at the end of preseason by the San Diego Chargers.
Hill ran for a Missouri Western State University record of 4,969 yards and 35 touchdowns in college before going undrafted in April.
The team's decision to go with Hill could be a sign that the Packers' running backs -- all of whom have have some type of injury -- could miss the Week 5 game against the Detroit Lions.
Replacing Hill on the Packers' practice squad is rookie Reggie Dunn, a wide receiver and kick returner. Only 5-foot-9 and 178 pounds, Dunn excelled in the return game at the University of Utah, setting school records as a senior with 10 kickoffs for 513 yards (51.3 average) and four touchdowns. Those numbers made him a first-team All-Pac-12 selection. Hill went undrafted and spent preseason with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
